The
Value of Practical Skills - Part I
Many in the homeschool community are waking up to the fact
that we are sending our sons into the world with very few “hands-on” skills.
Unless our dad was a carpenter, plumber or auto mechanic (and he took the time
to teach us that skill), there is a good chance that we have no knowledge of
even the basic skills that people a generation ago took for granted. Far from
encouraging the passing down of “hands-on” skills and the value of hard work,
our society has lampooned “hands-on” skills as something unnecessary and even
demeaning in today’s highly technical world. After all, it has only been in the
last fifty years that a man who can work with his hands has been considered
inferior socially. Our society has shaped us into thinking we ought to
discourage young men from learning a trade or a practical skill. That this will
somehow blunt his appetite for learning and that he will be tempted to forego
college, dashing all of his hopes for a successful future. That practical skills
are antiquated and not really necessary in this day and age. Perhaps it is
better to have a brilliant mind and be helpless, than to learn how to change an
alternator on your car. But, we see a very different view of practical skills in
the Word of God.
Acts 20:32-35 33 I have coveted no one's
silver or gold or apparel. 34 Yes, you yourselves know that these hands have
provided for my necessities, and for those who were with me. 35 I have shown you
in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And
remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give
than to receive.
Paul was the mental giant of his time. If anyone could have
made a living by sheer brain power alone, it would have been him. He could
refute the best theologians and philosophers of his day and yet, he used his
hands to provide for himself and his small army of co-laborers. But surely
working with his hands took Paul away from the more important duties of
teaching, administering and writing most of the New Testament! Why did he not
farm out the lesser tasks? To be an example to the flock and to not burden the
fledgling churches of the day (2 Thess 3:7-12). I gave a talk at the Austin Homeschool Convention entitled, The Value of Practical Skills. If you would like to find out more about

Practica Interviewing for Fun and Profit – Part 1For
a while now I have been harping on you to generate your own product.
“But I can’t write.” “I don’t have any
ideas.” “Everything has been done before.”Well, here
is a great way to generate your first product. Find someone who is
interesting and interview them. Really, it is that easy. Surely, you
know someone who
is very good at what they do. Why not write a list of 10-15 questions, arrange a
time to ask them and record the interview? Now,
before you counter with all the reasons why it will not work, let me cover the
big ones:What
kind of topics make for good interviews?Anything
that someone would be interested in and pay money for. Do you know someone who
is a whiz at marketing? Someone who is good at explaining taxes? Someone who
knows how to put on a great wedding while saving money? Someone who knows how to
shoot spectacular pictures? The list is endless! Why
would an expert agree to be interviewed? If they
are market savvy, they understand the power of having a third party interview
them...especially if that third party has a list of regular readers (you are
building your list, aren’t you?). You can reach people that have never heard of
them and perhaps send customers their way. If they aren’t market savvy, perhaps
you can convince that this is a great way to get their name out there. You can
even suggest splitting the profits from the sale of the CD’s with them. After
you account for the costs of the blank CD, CD label, case, case insert and
shipping; you can then split the profit with your interviewee. Or you can sell
your CD’s at wholesale to them and they can put them on their own website
(actually, this is a simpler way to do it).I don’t
know a lot about his field.You don’t
have to. That is why you are the “reporter” and not the expert. All you have to
do is guide the interview by asking questions that you or others like you would
have. It really helps to send the questions to your interviewee ahead of time so
that they are not caught off-guard and know where the interview is going. Also,
you want to make sure that you ask about any products he is selling and give his
website a few times. Ask if there are any questions that are off-topic. He may
not want to reveal who his wholesalers are or how much mark-up he has in his
products.Next time
we will cover some of the technical aspects of recording interviews. In the
meantime, check out an interview my daughter made with Wesley Callihan following
these exact steps! http://www.curriculumconnection.net/audiocdwhystudyclassics.htmBy the
