Hey!
Do you know who is visiting your site and how did they get there?
I have found a great little program that will tell you all of
this and much much more! And best of all, it is free! But before
I tell you where to find this little gem, let me explain why
knowing this information is so important.
First, you want to know how many unique visitors are coming to
your site. NOT how many hits! Hits are anything that happen to
land on your site…search engine bots, repeat visitors, requests
from other web sites and many other irrelevant things that do not
help you understand what is happening at your web site.
But unique visitors can help you understand how many NEW people
are coming to your site every day. And then you can tell where
they are coming from. Did they come another page in your web
site? Did they come from a search engine listing? If so, what
keyword where they searching on? Did they come from someone who
is recommending your web site? If so, have you incentivized that
person by sharing a commission with them when a sale results?
And there is tons of other information you can find out…
You can also find out stuff like where your readers live. I was
surprised to find out that I have a fairly large contingent of
readers from down under. Go Aussies! And New Zealanders!
You can also tell which of your pages are most popular (perhaps
you may want to put some adsense on those pages) and how many
returning visitors you get each day.
One of the really cool things is you can track how your visitors
move through your site. Which page did they enter, where did they
go next and what page did they leave your site from?
Why is that important?
Well, if perhaps there is a link that is not working and your
visitors are getting frustrated and leaving your site from the
page that has the broken link. Or perhaps they are getting to
your product page and moving on very quickly because the headline
just doesn’t grab them (did I mention you can also tell how long
your visitors stay on each page?).
And armed with all this information, you can start keeping track
of some metrics. Out of all your unique visitors, how many
subscribe to your newsletter? How many unique visitors buy your
product? How many get to your order page and then balk?
Knowing your dollar/unique visitor metric is very important. If
you know that for every unique visitor this month you will make
$1, it really encourages you to optimize your pages for the
search engines, write more articles to get those backward links
and do more joint ventures to build up your unique visitors and
email list.
It also helps when you approach a potential joint venture partner
to tell him that he will make x number of sales for every visitor
he sends your way!
So here is the really cool little software that does all of this:
You have to put a code on the pages you want to track and since
it is free, it has some annoying pop ups…but it can really help
you track some things in real time.
Enjoy!
