Information Products: Should You Give Them Away For Free?

When selling information there is a very good chance that someone will ask you to give you your information product to them at no cost. How should you handle that request? This article does not discuss giving products away to friends and family. That is your choice. Also not up for discussion here is giving bonus ebooks away as a special promotion. That is a specific marketing strategy that can be discussed at another time. What this article discusses is the concept of people contacting you out of nowhere and asking for your product for free.
On a regular basis someone contacts me requesting that I give away my course to them for free. Actually, this happens to me almost daily. Typically, the exchange will go as follows, “I just figured I would give it a shot. I was wondering if I could get your product for free?”
While I normally do not respond in the way I am tempted to respond, I often wonder what that person would think about me if I came to his or her house asking for free stuff?
Or if I waltzed into her place of work and asked her to give me what she sells at her job free of charge? Of course if I did that, the answer would be no.
Yet people still ask me for my products for free. I always respond that they need to pay for them so they will value it. Besides that, I do spend time and money on my products, so I too need to make a profit.
I am a perfect example of this. I have a lot of products on my computer that I have never looked at. The reason why is because these products were given to me for free. Those very same products that if I paid for them, I would have read or used. Since I did not pay for them I have no value attached to them and thus no motivation for using them.
This is something that I deal with on a regular basis so I am very familiar with it. Another technique that many people use is they will ask me if they can receive my product for free and then pay me once they have used my product to make money. The issue is people with this mindset will never make money. They might be very well intentioned.
However, because they have not invested any money into the process they are lacking a critical component that is necessary in order to be successful. Therefore, they will not make money and I would give all of my products away for free without making any money in return. Since I have my own family to support, this will not work. Besides, there is an investment that I have to make to produce these products.
The bottom line is you need to invest in the products to get value out of the products. This is true in most areas of life. If there is not some cost associate with something, there is also little value associated with that thing.
Consider how I do business. There is a huge demand for people looking to make money online. They are looking for the exact steps that they can take. They want to be held by the hand and walked through the process. This is what I specialize in and is why I do well. I create step-by-step video tutorials that show people how to get into profit mode quickly.
If you do the same in whatever market you decide to target, you will have products in high demand and will be very effective at selling information.
