Between work, family and everything else, I just don’t have a lot of spare time. And sometimes I just don’t feel like doing the things I KNOW NEED TO GET DONE!

Like driving traffic to my web sites.

I know I need to do it. I know that just a few traffic tactics would swell my online income like the winner in a hot dog eating contest. But I honestly I didn’t know where to begin.

So, I did what every hard-working entrepreneur would do…I gave the job to someone else!

I have a virtual assistant named Shannon who knew next to nothing about traffic, search engines and all that kind of stuff. I said, ”Here, watch this video and do what it says.”

You Are What You Read!

You’ve heard the expression “you are what you eat”. But I think another expression is equally true. “You are what you read!” What are you reading lately? Are you reading anything at all?

I try to start every morning reading my bible. Am I a busy person? Yes! Do I have projects and emails and everything else clamoring for my attention? Yes! But first things should be first. And I’m trying to kill two birds with one stone. I’m reading my bible in Spanish to get my bible reading in and learn Spanish at the same time.

And guess what? I go MUCH slower in Spanish, since it is not my native language, but my retention is much better because I am laboring over the text trying to interpret every word. And I am finding more details than if I skimmed over a passage I have read a dozen times in English!

But what else do I read?

Lately, I’ve just finished “The Slight Edge”, by Jeff Olson. It’s a great book on doing the little things over time and getting big results. Kind of like starting with a penny and doubling it every day. Day 1 = $0.01, Day 2 = $0.02, Day 3 = $0.04, Day 4 = $0.08 and so on. By Day 14, you would only have $81.92, but by Day 30, you would have over 5 million!

Olson goes on to take the principles of the Slight Edge to your health, relationships and finances. He dismisses the idea of quantum leaps saying they are nothing more than the Slight Edge bearing itself out over time. Little actions that seem to yield little results at first, even for months, but eventually pay huge dividends!

Another book I just finished is “Unique Ability”. A great concept I got from that book is to NOT work on the things you are weak in, you can always give those tasks to others, but work in accordance with your strengths. Now, I am not talking about character deficiencies. If you have a problem with anger, by all means, get it under control. But why should you work on your graphics skills when someone else can do that for you on Elance.com for $50? Work on your strengths!

And finally, I am in the middle of “The Power of Full Engagement”. What a wonderful book about managing your energy levels during the day so you avoid burnout and fatigue. Do you find yourself flagging by 4pm? Then you need to pick up a copy of this book. Schedule your daily tasks according to your body’s natural rhythms!

So the question is …would I rather have a million dollars or a millionaire mindset. The millionaire mindset every time! I can lose a million dollars (and many people do!), but I can make it back if I have a millionaire mindset. And that only comes from reading good books!

And the most important principle I have learned is that you must offer more to those who want more.

Let me explain. A few years ago I offered a product about starting an online business. It was a real simple product sold from a simple website. I sold the product for about $47 or $57, and about 900 people bought it. So I went back to them and asked them, “What else do you want?”

And my customers answered. They said, “Steve, we could really use some videos and some audios and some coaching.” So I agreed. I went back to my office, and a month later I came out with “Secrets to Building Sites That Sell.”

Business Start-up Courses Are in High Demand

home-study course (article 88)Basically it is a home-study course on how to sell physical products on the internet. Whatever my customers told me they wanted, I incorporated it into a little audio-video product. And I sold about $51,000 over the first 6 days.

Now I really started thinking. I became convinced I could make these online sites a full-time career. Then I could be my own boss and have more free time. It was a significant revelation.

My wife also got in on the business. She created an ebay course that netted another $14,000 in just 20 days. I created my second course and called it “8 Weeks to Profits.” In 9 short days, I made another $50,000. It may sound silly, but these are no longer information products in my mind. Since I am from Texas, I think of them as mini-oil wells. And the beauty of it is, they are constantly generating income, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is so easy to create it one time and set it on autopilot.

You might be wondering, “But how does this help me? I am not you or Kerry. How can I possibly be successful?” You really could end up with your own “mini wells” and spend more time doing what you really love.

We have sold homeschool curriculum, eBooks, and home-study courses built around online business how to tips. And we have learned a lot about the intnert through both our success and failures.

The first eBook we ever sold, my wife wrote. It is called “Raising Leaders, Not Followers.” Basically it was an eBook designed specifically for homeschoolers, teaching them how to raise their kids for leadership positions. My wife approached me with the idea, and I said, “Honey, it is not really a barn-burning topic. I just do not know that you are going to make any money with it.” Well, she proved me wrong. She sold $11,197 the first 19 days. How is that for internet marketing 101?

nativity (squidoo)Not too shabby, right? On the heels of her first success, my wife started thinking about another eBook for the Christmas season. She said to me, “Sweetie, I am going to write another eBook about preparing your heart for Christmas. It seems like a lot of people get close to Christmas day and end up discouraged because they were not really prepared for the season. The presents are great, but what do they do next?”

I told her, “That is a great idea, but there is so much free stuff on the internet about Christmas. How do you think you will get people to buy it?” I was not too optimistic, but she proved me wrong again. She sold over $2000 with her Christmas eBook. It turned out to be an unexpected bonus. And now every year, we roll it out a month or so before Christmas, and every year we get the same bonus.

You see the principle here? Well, I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, I will be the first to admit. But when I saw my wife do these two things, I thought, I can do it myself. And I got my chance to start an internet business pretty quickly.

I had a red pickup truck. It was a Ford F150. My daughter had taken it to high school. She was playing softball with the high school. And all of a sudden, her teammates were screaming, “Gentry, your truck is on fire!” She looks up. There were flames going 20 feet high out from under the hood.

Turns out Ford had recalled the cruise control switch in this particular model. And I could see why. Once we got the fire put out, we could see that the truck was totaled. I called Ford, but all they could do was apologize. It seems they had notified me of the recall by sending me a notice to my previous address in Texas. But we lived in Idaho.

I decided to start an online business, so I put up a little website that said, “My truck caught on fire.” I had pictures of the truck, and I opened up the hood and showed how all the engine compartment was burned up and all the wires were burned up. I said, “Why don’t you help me while I help you? I’m going to give you all this free internet marketing stuff. Graphics package. Some software. eBooks. Marketing tips.” All this stuff I had compiled and got free off the internet. I compiled it into a product and sold it for like $47. And I made $5,470 in the first 9 days.

I hope what you are seeing from these real-life examples is that you can succeed on the internet. Seriously! All you need is a little online business how to and you can begin making a profit.

A Personal Message From Stephen and Kerry

I have a new appreciation for those of you who work during the day and run your online business in the evenings or weekends.  You see, I have jury duty this week and I have to put everything on hold until I find out if I’m picked for the jury this afternoon.

We have a lunch break and I’m in a coffee shop where I can get a little work done.  I’m going to send some cool vacation cards and some follow up cards to our clients.    If I have time, I’ll schedule some appointments, also.

Why do I mention this?

If you are limited with your time on some days, you MUST do 1 business building activity.  What business building activity did you do today?

Before I left for jury selection, I sent an email to one of my Send Out Cards team members to schedule a business opportunity meeting.  I won’t see cash in my bank account today from that email.  But, when we have that meeting, I will see cash in my bank account and growth in my SOC team.

A little work on the RIGHT ACTIVITIES each day “will” grow your business to the next level. I guarantee it.

Make Amazing Profits Using Drop-Shipping

Drop-shipping is the coolest internet concept you’ve never heard of. With drop-shipping, you have no inventory, no warehouse, and no stock cluttering up your home. Simply sell the products through your website, process the orders, and have the wholesaler ship it directly to your customer. It’s like having free products to sell online!

Think about that. No inventory and no shipping. You just take the order and someone else ships the product. Drop shipping has a few advantages over affiliate sites. Affiliate sites are where you recommend a product and then send your customer to that website via an affiliate link so that you get the credit and hopefully a commission.

But a lot can go wrong. The customer may not make it to that site. Also, you have no control over what that site looks like, or changes made to that site or how your customer will navigate around on that site. The biggest problem is the fact that you are not collecting the money to ensure you get paid!

Drop-shipping, on the other hand, saves you money, while letting you retain complete control over your own website. You have no shipping costs, no inventory to store or count. It’s as close as you can get to having free products to sell online! Just think of what you could sell using drop-shipping:

* Home based gift business drop shipping

* Gems and Jewelery-making Supplies Drop-Shipping

* Candle wholesaler/supplier drop-shipping

* Fabric, upholstery, and trim

* Cast iron banks

* Home security products home business drop shippers

That’s just a start – there are thousands of opportunities out there!

Although drop shipping sounds like the best thing since sliced bread, finding a wholesaler or a manufacturer to drop ship can be a challenge. Not all wholesalers want to mess with drop shipping and many on the internet who pose as wholesalers are not wholesalers at all…they are cleverly disguised “buying clubs” or “internet malls” designed to separate you from your money. They are drop ship sales scam artists and not dealers with wholesale products to sell.

For 24 years I’ve been trying to juggle the duties every Mom has…family, house, marriage. In 1998, I opened a small business with my kids so I added work to all my other responsibilities. At that time my kids were 5, 8, 10. How could I do it? And, why in the world did I decide to open a small curriculum store?

Steve & I had discussed the importance of giving our kids entrepreneurial skills so they could have the freedom to make their own choices as an adult. A part-time store seemed like the perfect answer. We also wanted to help homeschool moms in our area.

Do you have an idea already, or do you need some online business ideas? I have been building my own internet business over the past ten years or so and can share some real-life examples of what to do and what not to do.

Let me start by telling you a little bit about myself. My wife Kerry and I call ourselves “The Couple Next Door” because we are just like you when it comes to internet marketing. Neither one of us has a degree in computers or in business. Instead, we have built up a large base of knowledge and experience when it comes to starting an internet business. It happened almost by accident when I was in my 40s. I started going to seminary and needed an income to support my family. So I began creating information products.

Online Business Idea #1 – Start With What You Know

The truth is that if we can do it, you can, too. Like I said, I have not always had an online business. For 20 years, I did home remodeling. Then my wife started up a little company called Curriculum Connection. She wanted to help other homeschoolers find curriculum to use. As it grew, she began asking me, “Steve, do you know how to build web pages? How can we get online with our products?” So I started working on it, and even though I was clueless at first, I quickly figured it out. At the same time, I was in seminary.

There we were over 2000 miles from home and with no family, no friends, and no job. We needed the income we were used to having from my remodeling jobs, and we needed it fast.

That got me looking for the perfect business. And I know that you probably have your hands full, too. You have a lot going on, but you can take your idea for a business and begin building it today. Soon you might even see your income surpass your current job.

Online Business Idea #2 – Define Your Criteria

But like I said, I started looking for the perfect business, and these were my criteria. I wanted to do something one time and get paid over and over. I wanted to invest a few hours a week and get paid really well. I wanted to sell a product, have it get delivered, get paid, have my partners get paid if I had some, all without me doing a thing. I wanted it on autopilot. And I wanted not just to get paid one time for a product. I wanted to turn every sale into a monthly income stream. I wanted low start up costs, high reward for little risks. I wasn’t asking for too much was I?

You might say I had unrealistic expectations. But think about it. There is a business that would meet all my needs: creating and selling information products online. Once you have created it, you can sell it over and over again.

You start off by spending a little time packaging quality content, market it on the internet, and then sell it quickly and painlessly. You really could almost put the whole thing on auto pilot.

Online Business Idea #3 – Think Realistically

It was very low start-up costs. In fact, that is one of the questions I am routinely asked. “Steve, how much does it cost to start an online business?” For $15 a year for a domain name, and that is kind of high these days, and $50 a year for hosting, and $20 a month for an autoresponder, you can set up an online business. And that is really all it takes to get started.

If you have an idea, why not start today? These online business ideas are practical and easy to do and can get you going on a path to greater financial freedom.

Begin by nailing down what you will market as your information product.

That begs the question, “What is an information product?” An information product is any knowledge in your head that others would find valuable. Let me repeat that, any knowledge or experience in your head that others would find valuable can be packaged and sold.

You can share this knowledge with others through a variety of media. That can be a digital product, a physical product, an e-book, a video, an audio, or all of the above. Many of my products have an all of the above component. Some are written, some are videos, some are audios, some are multi-media productions.

Business Start-up Advice #2 – Develop Your Own Name

The key to starting your own business is to have one product that is exclusively your own. Otherwise, you are building someone else’s name and not your own. I am not refering to network marketing. I think that is great. If you are selling Mary Kay or Amway or whatever, then go for it. But in order to really start up your own business, you will absolutely need your own product.

You should be the one to control your business and your time. It is crazy to work for a small percentage of money or to let someone else tell you how to do things in your business. You should be in control and of your time and your products. When it is your own, you could keep anywhere from 90 to 95% of the profits.

All of the big players have their own product. We are talking names like Armon Moore and Ray Edwards, Alex Mendoza, Dan Kennedy. All the guys in the information marketing business have their own product. Why? Because they know that it works and it builds their own brand instead of someone else’s.

Business Start-up Advice #3 – Get Out of the Time for Money Trap

And you get out of the trading time for money trap. A lot of you are in that trap right now, whether you are working a 9 to 5 job, or even if you are doing consulting. You are still trading time for money. When you can create something one time and sell it over and over and over, you get out of that trading time for money trap.

Business Start up Advice #4 – Establish Your Authority

Think of how much authority you can establish when people read your ebook of listen to your CD. You will be seen as an expert in your niche and as someone who can be trusted.

Think of how many leads you can generate for your business by giving them something concrete. An information product makes your business memorable and can also build your list.

So start today by brainstorming what you know and write down the information you have in your brain. Make your products from this knowledge and begin building a business. In a short while, you will be in charge of a growing business and responsible for giving others business start-up advice.

A Personal Message From Stephen and Kerry

We just got back from our London trip and it is taking me awhile to get back in the swing of life. All of our kids, including our son-in-law, came with us overseas. As our kids get older, I’m reminded how quickly they grow up. Our teenage son, Hunter, is the only one living in our home, so we value the times we spend together, as well as special trips with each other. I’m also reminded of what matters most in life…our relationships with each other. Although I enjoy our business and the trips we take, spending time with our kids and keeping the communication lines open is so much more important…and much more fun.

Are you so busy in your life that you don’t enjoy the ones you love? Do you share a meal together daily so you can enjoy each other’s accomplishments? That’s what is important in life, so be sure you spend time with your children before they grow up & leave your home. Budding entrepreneurs should learn how to start an online business with e-books. When you sell e-books, there is no inventory to stock, and no shipping fees. This is an easy way to create an e-business.

Selling e-books online is a great way to start your business. The information in this article will keep customers coming back, providing you a steady income even after the first e-book has been purchased. Dont just sell an e-book for $37 one-time; customers who pay you month after month provide an exceptional income!

Develop a group of customers, all paying monthly, using “forced continuity”. Let me explain. When a visitor buys your e-book, they automatically receive a free 30 day membership to your club (a value of, lets say, $20). Of course, club members get great bonuses – perhaps an online membership site, or a monthly audio club for CDs.

At the end of 30 days, their credit card will be automatically charged for the following month. They will remain members until they choose to unsubscribe.

To summarize, you will get $37 for your e-book, plus another $40 for two months of membership dues. The best case scenario is you keep them happy and they stay with you forever and ever and ever. So that $37 e-book sale may have become $300 in membership sales – just because they stayed with you in your membership club.

If asked, most customers are reluctant to join clubs. However, they just cant resist a free trial. Tell them that the 30 day trial is free, and their card will be charged afterwards. They have 30 days to enjoy all the valuable benefits that you can offer them. Some will cancel, but many will stay with you for a long period.

Using forced continuity can make selling your e-book a much easier task. You sell only one e-book, yet you continue to collect payments each month. By learning how to start an online business with e-books, you can take your business to greater success.
