I Finished Work Early Today…

It’s 3pm and I’m taking off!

Do I still have emails to answer? Yes. Do I still have a sales letter to write? You bet! Do I still have a web page to check for mistakes, broken links and upload to my server? Yes!

But all that can wait, because I am taking my lovely wife of 25 years downtown to sip some wine. There is this great little wine bistro that serves difficult to find wines from all over the world. And after a long day of work, I just want to sit back, sip a little Cabernet Sauvignon and visit with my wife!

After all, that’s why I chose this crazy world on online business.

Yes, I work hard. But when I’m done, I’m done. And while we may visit a little bit about business this afternoon, it will be mostly “big picture” stuff. Where do we see ourselves in 5 years? What will it look like when all of the kids are out of the house? How many mission trips do we want to take next year?

I love working with my wife in an online business. I didn’t enjoy it as much in my remodeling business. Too much stress! But in my online business, I have a lot less headaches and make a lot more money! So, make a goal right now to take off early one day this month. Then take your child, friend or spouse out on the town and do some “big picture” thinking. Because “big picture” thinking leads to big time paychecks!

Find Products to Sell Online

Once you are ready to start an online business, you may feel overwhelmed by the challenge of finding unique products to sell. You don’t want the same old stuff everyone else has – you want to succeed in your own niche. Here’s how to plan your sales for maximum profit.

Offer products that are in demand and offer you a higher markup. Figure out how to make sales online using higher-end products. Let’s use the home-schooling market as an example. Now, I can sell a single book and make, say, $5. But what if I could offer an entire course, one with a $50 markup? Suddenly, my profits are ten times higher, without any extra work! Here’s how you can increase sales and make more profits from your online business:

Step 1: Choose a high demand homeschool product that has a high markup. Of course it has to be something you can resell or be paid an affiliate commission.

Step 2: Write a review on the product. By writing a review, you become known as the residential home-schooling expert. People will seek out your advice, so create a one-page website for your review.

Step 3: Do your keyword research and optimize your one page web site for those keywords by using Wordtracker. Then add an email capture box and a shopping cart to your one page website.

Step 4: Write articles, lots of them. Submit them to article directories on the internet. Of course, you will have included your keywords in the title, body, and even the bio at the end. This gives your customers lots of backward links to help them find your website, while increasing your rankings in search engine results.

Step 5: Find forums which discuss that product. Become the forum expert with a tactful link to your site in the signature

It takes time to complete these steps, though you don’t need much money to get started. Following these steps is the best way to build a successful online business.

Remember to keep the big picture in focus so you choose products with high markups and higher prices. Before you know it, your bottom line will increase and you’ll have great products in a somewhat difficult niche.

A Personal Message From Stephen and Kerry

Kerry and I will be traveling quite a bit in May. First, we go to Scotland for a few days of vacation. Then on to London to speak at the “More Leads, More Clients, More Sales” event given by Bernadette Doyle. Then a quick trip to Belfast, Ireland, to visit with Bernadette.

When we get back to the States, we will leave for Yanik Silver’s MasterMind in Bethesda Maryland and then start planning our trip to East Asia in mid-June!

I love to travel. Especially with my wife.

I love to see new things, meet new people and stay in exotic places. And this also retools my mind. As I go on all these trips, my business mind begins to “catch up” with my leisure mind. My business mind starts figuring out what it would take to make the income necessary to make all of these trips happen! Then I start creating products, getting more customers and making more money.

You can do the same thing. Is there something you can do right now that you have always considered a stretch? Something that you always thought was too expensive …just out of your reach? Try doing it and see if your business mind (ie…practical nature) plays catch up.

We recently returned from a trip to Cancun, Mexico, for a trip that Kerry had won through Send Out Cards. On the way over, we were bumped to first class. Now my leisure mind was saying, “I could get used to this!”  …but my business mind was saying, “What would it take to make this a normal way to travel!”

So, think of something that seems extravagant. A massage. A day at the spa. A chartered fishing trip. Go ahead and book it. Then let your business mind figure out how to make that luxury happen on a regular basis!

Quit Doing Everything Yourself!

Most of my clients know that I was in the construction industry for 20 years before starting my online businesses. What you probably don’t know is how close I came to folding my construction company and working for someone else after 5 years of struggling.

For young construction companies, finding clients is the difference between corporate life and death. While I managed to find many small jobs, most of these only lasted two or three days. I was running myself ragged trying to pay the bills. I was desperate to find larger jobs, which were more profitable and saved time moving and setting up equipment.

Finally, I started landing larger jobs and pretty soon, I had all the work that I and a helper could handle. Large jobs, small jobs and everything in between. Then, it began to dawn on me that I had maxed out. I could not physically do anymore work in a week than I was doing at the time. I could not take on any more work because there was only one of me (and a helper) to do the work.

Then, something occurred to me

I had also reached my limit, money wise. My earnings had plateaued. Since we could not physically produce more, we could not earn more. I was frustrated. I enjoyed owning my own business, but I also knew I could work less and earn more by working as a building superintendent in Houston. Imagine – free medical insurance, free dental insurance, a retirement plan, and more.

I had none of these benefits being self-employed. So I had to make a decision. Continue to work 70 hours a week at a fixed income with no benefits…or make a change. Well, I made a change!

I found a course offered by the Home Builders Association in San Antonio. This three-day seminar was full of fascinating information and interesting people. A fellow participant, Don Boozer, offered some great advice. He suggested I move into general contracting. Of course, I’d need to delegate, to share the responsibilities.

“But Don,” I asked, “if I don’t do the work, who will? I’ll just be phoning other people to do my work. Nobody’s going to pay me to make phone calls.”

Don’s reply was confident as he said, “Yes, they will pay you. They’ll pay you very well!” And you know what? They did!

The next year my income doubled (that superintendent job in Houston was no longer very attractive!) and the following year my income doubled again. After that, I never made less than six figures a year.

I’m not saying that to brag. Don’s advice helped me, and it can help you too.

Because, the only way to increase your income fast is to increase your business awareness fast. And the fastest way to do that is to start a web business or attend a conference that is specific to your industry. If you want to make money online, then go to a conference that is SPECIFIC to making money online and there you can map out a business plan for an online business!

Rite of Passage

Every civilization has a rite of passage for those in their group that move from “student” to a contributing member of the group able to fend for themselves. You find it in the martial arts, in the working world, in the medical world (look up “white coat ceremony”) and in the animal kingdom!

There comes a point when the “apprentice” learns his craft and then launches on his own …but with his own unique style …his own unique product. He has relied heavily on his “tutor”, but now he/she is ready to take those skills and try them in the “real world”.

Today is THAT DAY for one of my apprentices. Actually it is a partnership of two gentlemen working together and they are having their first webinar today, March 30 at 9pm (Eastern). Recruit Some Secret Agents to Build Your Business!

When you think of the perfect business, what comes to mind? For most people, the perfect business runs itself. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could automate your website so it would sell your products even while you sleep? Well, you can!

One day, along comes a visitor to your site. She sees an invitation to your newsletter, and though she is already flooded with e-mails, she is intrigued.

“Hey, I like the way this guy thinks. He makes a lot of sense. I’d like to read that newsletter and see what else he has to say.

Autoresponder number 1 has worked.

(This is called a contact management online autoresponder, but don’t let the big name scare you!)

As your visitor reads the newsletter, she appreciates your honest evaluation of your products. She sees something that’s perfect for her, and decides to buy it.

Immediately after she makes her purchase, she gets an e-mail. Shes delighted to learn that she has received an added bonus, a free gift with her purchase.

Autoresponder number 2 has done his job.

The following week, a third auto responder generates an e-mail for your customer. She’s happy that you have taken the time to ask how she enjoys the product, the service, and the value. She is asked for a testimonial that you can share with others on your website which she gladly e-mails back.

Autoresponder number 3 has done its job.

Each week your customer gets another email helping them with the product and explaining things the product can do. The emails also give your customer tips on how to use the product to expand their business or how to make more beautiful scrapbooks or how to save money on their next purchase or how to build a free website without pay…or whatever your product is about.

This helps keep your customer happy and reduces the likelihood that they will return your product. Remember, many people will not even use your product (especially information products), unless you encourage them to do so.

Autoresponders #4 – #10 have done their jobs.

Of course, clients that are interested in a $10 e-book may also be interested in your more expensive home study course. Perhaps there are other opportunities for cross marketing. By tracking the preferences of each client, and speaking directly to their preferences and desires, you can increase sales.

Your customer will get personalized e-mails, recommending products similar to the ones that have already been purchased. She sees the benefits, and has been looking for this product for ages. Thank goodness you just brought it to her attention.

She clicks on the link and buys the related product. Autoresponder number 11 has done its job.

I hope you are seeing the value of my secret agents, autoresponders #1 – #11. They work while I am doing other things-like developing product, spending time with my family and yes, even while I am sleeping.

Options! Opportunities! Openings!

When you get on the internet and try to decipher all the home business options, it can be overwhelming. At least it’s overwhelming to me. So, I’d like to share with you the criteria I’ve used in choosing what business opportunities to pursue on a regular basis.

1. Something I Believe In

If I didn’t make a dime from this product or service, would I still recommend it? This reminds me of the early days of Southwest Airlines. One of the biggest reasons I told people that I fly Southwest is their on-time record. It seemed that every time we flew Southwest we were either on-time or early. When I look for a business opportunity, I want to offer a spectacular product or service that I would use even if I didn’t make money from it.

2. Solves a Bad Problem for a Huge, Growing Market

We teach this concept to our students. It is vital that you solve a problem in a niche. If you aren’t solving a huge problem, no one is going to buy it. It’s the same with business opportunities you’re given. They must solve a huge problem. What is even better is when there is little competition. Notice I didn’t say “no competition”. Competition is healthy and it tells you there is demand for that product. But, it’s a plus if your competition is low.

3. Stable, Solid, Debt-Free Company

When you work with another company, it should be stable & solid. One of the best tests is the amount of debt a company holds. Ideally, I think you should find a debt-free company. This is rare in today’s marketplace, but it is definitely possible.

4. Provides Marketing Tools that are Tried & Tested

You don’t want to develop your own marketing tools. At least I think it’s much easier to use marketing tools that have already been tested to work. When you evaluate home business options, be sure there are marketing tools that actually work and are simple to use. One of my tests is the 8 year old test. If an 8 year old could use the marketing tools to tell a friend about your product or service, could he be successful? It ought to be that SIMPLE…brain-dead simple!

5. Opportunity for Large, Passive Income

Although this is the last criteria, it is certainly not the least one to consider. In fact, I think this is one of the most important criteria in choosing a home business. One of the reasons we work from home is Freedom & Choices. We choose when we want to work. We choose whom we work with. We choose where we work. We have the freedom to make these choices.

Why is that? We have passive income each month…”mailbox money”. This allows us the freedom to reach outside ourselves to do mission work and to spend more time with our family. Does your home business give you real, residual income to allow you these freedoms and choices?

As you evaluate your home business options, be sure that each of these criteria are met. You’ll have more success and more fun along the way.
