To start a home-based business with your spouse, you will need to plan ahead on how you will work together. Here are 5 tips to help you.

1. Be very careful about not being willing to take criticism. While we tend to resent criticism more from a spouse or loved one it is a necessary element to running a business. However, you should encourage your spouse to reserve any business related criticism for the specific times that you have set to actually work on your business.

2. Keep the wall of separation up between issues that affect you home-based business and issues that affect your marriage. It is not appropriate to bring up conversations that are better served for family time while you are running the business together. It is a given that you are both going to have different opinions about issues. That said, there is a time and a place for everything. It is also not appropriate to bring up conversations that are better served for business time during family time.

3. Look for opportunities where you can get outside of your home office to strategize for your business. Doing this on a quarterly basis is an excellent habit for building a successful business. There are plenty of events that you can schedule for this, such as a dinner meeting, getting together at a nice and quiet bar or coffee shop or even going to a winery.

4. When you have a date night make sure that business is not the topic of discussion. Even if you both enjoy what you do this can be a very unhealthy habit. You need time to be together as a couple without the business.

5. Go to a business conference together. You should stay one day after the conference so you can identify ways that you can apply what you learned and who you met that you might want to partner with in your the business. It is also good to have your spouse at these conferences as you tend to be more focused than if you go on your own.

When you start a home based business with your spouse it can be a rewarding and fun event, but it is important that you make sure that you keep your relationship strong both while working and outside of working.

I Finished Work Early Today…

It’s 3pm and I’m taking off!

Do I still have emails to answer? Yes. Do I still have a sales letter to write? You bet! Do I still have a web page to check for mistakes, broken links and upload to my server? Yes!

But all that can wait, because I am taking my lovely wife of 25 years downtown to sip some wine. There is this great little wine bistro that serves difficult to find wines from all over the world. And after a long day of work, I just want to sit back, sip a little Cabernet Sauvignon and visit with my wife!

After all, that’s why I chose this crazy world on online business.

Yes, I work hard. But when I’m done, I’m done. And while we may visit a little bit about business this afternoon, it will be mostly “big picture” stuff. Where do we see ourselves in 5 years? What will it look like when all of the kids are out of the house? How many mission trips do we want to take next year?

I love working with my wife in an online business. I didn’t enjoy it as much in my remodeling business. Too much stress! But in my online business, I have a lot less headaches and make a lot more money! So, make a goal right now to take off early one day this month. Then take your child, friend or spouse out on the town and do some “big picture” thinking. Because “big picture” thinking leads to big time paychecks!

Find Products to Sell Online

Once you are ready to start an online business, you may feel overwhelmed by the challenge of finding unique products to sell. You don’t want the same old stuff everyone else has – you want to succeed in your own niche. Here’s how to plan your sales for maximum profit.

Offer products that are in demand and offer you a higher markup. Figure out how to make sales online using higher-end products. Let’s use the home-schooling market as an example. Now, I can sell a single book and make, say, $5. But what if I could offer an entire course, one with a $50 markup? Suddenly, my profits are ten times higher, without any extra work! Here’s how you can increase sales and make more profits from your online business:

Step 1: Choose a high demand homeschool product that has a high markup. Of course it has to be something you can resell or be paid an affiliate commission.

Step 2: Write a review on the product. By writing a review, you become known as the residential home-schooling expert. People will seek out your advice, so create a one-page website for your review.

Step 3: Do your keyword research and optimize your one page web site for those keywords by using Wordtracker. Then add an email capture box and a shopping cart to your one page website.

Step 4: Write articles, lots of them. Submit them to article directories on the internet. Of course, you will have included your keywords in the title, body, and even the bio at the end. This gives your customers lots of backward links to help them find your website, while increasing your rankings in search engine results.

Step 5: Find forums which discuss that product. Become the forum expert with a tactful link to your site in the signature

It takes time to complete these steps, though you don’t need much money to get started. Following these steps is the best way to build a successful online business.

Remember to keep the big picture in focus so you choose products with high markups and higher prices. Before you know it, your bottom line will increase and you’ll have great products in a somewhat difficult niche.

Building your email list. That should be job #1 for every online marketer. Having a list means you can invite them to a webinar, recommend a ClickBank product, recommend a workshop, offer a special sale, send them a thank you email, etc. It all starts with building your list.

But what if you don’t have a list? Then go out and create one. Start a free Tumblr blog and put an email capture box from Aweber on it. Then go out to all the places where your target market hangs out – blogs, forums, Yahoo groups, etc. Answer the questions you see and give intelligent advice. Then leave a signature that has your name and a link your Tumblr blog or web site. They will follow you home and sign up for your email list.

Another way is to find people who will share their list with you. First you have to find the people who already own an email list in your niche. Then you have to start a relationship with them. Warning: This requires effort!

• Send them an email. Better yet, have someone introduce you first (if that’s possible), then send them an email.
• Then send them a card. We use Send Out Cards to send a card and brownie with the touch of a button. Send us an email if you would like us to show you how

• Then pick up the phone. Nothing says you are serious like actually picking up the phone and calling someone.
• Go to live events that feature online marketing. You will find hundreds of people who have an email list all in one place!
• Join a mastermind. Seriously, this is the secret sauce. When you meet with like-minded marketers for two straight days – three times a year – you start making plans to promote each other’s stuff. The $15K I spend to be in Yanik Silver’s mastermind is a drop in the bucket compared with the business I have developed with the other members in the mastermind!

So start building your list. There is no other activity that will reward you as handsomely as building a large, responsive list of people who eagerly look forward to receiving your emails!

How To Use Techniques On Business Webinars
That Drive Prospects To Take Action!

If you are looking to maximize your sales on business webinars, you must motivate your attendees to buy from you. You can do this by creating elements in your marketing process. These elements need to be built in whether you do online of offline marketing and whether you sell services, physical products or digital products. These elements are creating a sense of urgency and a fear of loss.

One of the most powerful marketing concepts is scarcity. For example, when on a webinar, you can say “This offer will only be available until 12:00PM tomorrow.” Or you can offer a bonus that will only be available for a certain amount of time. The key is that you must offer something to move them into action now. If there is no deadline, people will feel that they can buy whenever they want.

You can also drive prospects to take action on your business webinars by limiting supply. If you say “There are only 150 copies of this item” people know there is a risk you might run out. Make sure the reason you limit copies makes sense. Saying “only 150 copies because I feel like it” will not work.

How can you limit supply with credibility? Say you offer an in person training program. You can say that you can only take a certain amount of students because your time is limited and you are still busy running your own business. Workshops can be limited by space limitations. Physical products can be limited by quantity limitations. Whatever you decide, the key is to make sure the reason for the limitations are credible ones.

Another quantity technique, like for market trading products is “I am only going to put out 100 because I need to limit the impact on the market. If everyone gets access to these strategies it will hurt us all.” This way you can use market impact as an excuse to limit quantity to increase urgency in the sales process.

The previous techniques deal with sense of urgency but using fear of loss on business webinars is also important. By presenting a potential loss in the mind of your prospect this can be a powerful motivator for taking action. For instance, if you say “free shipping to the first 50 buyers”, this will motivate some people on the fence to take action.

With these examples, you should see why it is so important to provide a reason for your prospects to buy from you now. You also should have a consequence if they buy later. The most common one that is that the price goes up. You can also make the product not available at all our take components of the product out. Whatever you do, they need to understand what they do not get by waiting.

This also works well when you create live events. Business webinars are live events that have a maximum amount of participants that can connect. Live in person events have a maximum amount of space. An event can even be something going on in your life or business that affects what you are promoting.

Say you are celebrating your 11th anniversary. You can use that event as a promotion for your product. The promotion can consist of a sale of your product for 11 days. The 1st day has the lowest price and each day the price increases. Once the 11th day passes, the product is pulled from the market. This way your prospects have a daily sense of urgency and fear of loss to take action. Business webinars are an excellent way to communicate and implement this.

The bottom line is if you want to maximize your conversion rates you need to implement plans to do so. By creating a sense of urgency and a fear of loss you motivate people who might have otherwise put it off to do business with you.

Learning By Observing!

I just finished speaking at a conference in London. Wow, what a great time! But the thing that had the most impact happened after the conference. Barry Dunlop, a marketer extraordinaire, invited Kerry and me to his house for a few days.

And here’s the odd thing. We didn’t talk that much about business.

Barry and his lovely wife, Tina, showed us around Sussex. We stopped at a beautiful winery for sconces, then a castle, a roman villa, the beach and finally a lovely dinner at a wonderful seafood restaurant. At dinner, we spoke at length with Barry’s sons about the British health system, wealth mentality and Texas gun laws!

What a robust and entertaining evening!

The point is this. Just being around men and women who have acquired wealth is an education in itself. You don’t have to even talk about business. Just see how they interact with waiters, friends, family and everyone else. What books they have in their library. Even what their normal day looks like.

So if you want to increase your wealth, it starts between your ears. Hang out with some people who are where you want to be in five years and great things will start to happen!

With a few “webinar how to” tips, you can easily host your own. The beauty is they can explode your online or offline business and at a conversion rate that beats almost any other marketing strategy. I have seen anywhere between 10 and 30% of attendees become buyers. Are you interested in this kind of conversion? Great! Read on, and I’ll show you what you need to host your own webinar.

The first step is to put together a dynamite powerpoint presentation. In it, you will want to keep a balance of giving enough content that your attendees feel like their time was well spent but also creating a desire to know more, even leaving some questions unanswered. To be fair, you could not possibly present everything about your niche in just one 60-minute webinar. Nor could your attendees learn everything in that same amount of time. So it is to your benefit and theirs to offer an opportunity for “continuing education” at the end of your webinar. This education could come in the form of a book, an ebook, a home study course, or your services.

So as you create your presentation, keep this balance in mind: give great content but leave something to be desired, and that will motivate your attendees to come back.

The second webinar how to step is finding a webinar hosting platform. There are a variety of webinar hosting solutions for all types of budgets. Choosing the right one for you depends on how you will use it. If you plan on having a lot of people at the same time (over 1000), a pay per attendee per minute may be the way to go.

If you can limit your webinars to 1000 attendees and plan on having a lot of webinars per month, a monthly flat rate for webinar hosting would probably be the better way to go. Most of the webinar hosting companies have similar features, so it usually comes down to usage and attendance size.

The third webinar how to step is inviting people to your webinars. Once you have your webinar ppt created and chosen a company to host your webinar, now you need to think about who to invite to your webinar.

The best place to start is your existing email list. But what if you don’t have an email list? Now you know better! Lucky for you there are companies that can help you build this list. If you give them your customers’ physical addresses, they can return an email list to you.

After your own email list, visit blogs, forums and Yahoo Groups that cater to your target market. Write a content-driven post or answer a question, then leave the webinar invitation in your signature. Other places to find attendees for your webinar are facebook, twitter, Google buzz, squidoo and myspace. In fact, announce your webinar in all the social media places and even submit an online press release.

Finally, remember your affiliates. You can work out reciprocal arrangements with your partners and even your competitiors. This will especially be popular if you show them what is in it for them. You could give them a portion of the sales or even set up a webinar where you share subscribers lists.

These three webinar how to steps are crucial for planning and hosting your webinars. None of these steps are particularly challenging; they simply require a bit of planning and execution. Follow through, and you will see your sales explode like never before.

Kerry and I will be traveling quite a bit in May. First, we go to Scotland for a few days of vacation. Then on to London to speak at the “More Leads, More Clients, More Sales” event given by Bernadette Doyle. Then a quick trip to Belfast, Ireland, to visit with Bernadette.

I love to travel. Especially with my wife.

I love to see new things, meet new people and stay in exotic places. And this also retools my mind. As I go on all these trips, my business mind begins to “catch up” with my leisure mind. My business mind starts figuring out what it would take to make the income necessary to make all of these trips happen! Then I start creating products, getting more customers and making more money.

You can do the same thing. Is there something you can do right now that you have always considered a stretch? Something that you always thought was too expensive …just out of your reach? Try doing it and see if your business mind (ie…practical nature) plays catch up.

Quit Doing Everything Yourself!

Most of my clients know that I was in the construction industry for 20 years before starting my online businesses. What you probably don’t know is how close I came to folding my construction company and working for someone else after 5 years of struggling.

For young construction companies, finding clients is the difference between corporate life and death. While I managed to find many small jobs, most of these only lasted two or three days. I was running myself ragged trying to pay the bills. I was desperate to find larger jobs, which were more profitable and saved time moving and setting up equipment.

Finally, I started landing larger jobs and pretty soon, I had all the work that I and a helper could handle. Large jobs, small jobs and everything in between. Then, it began to dawn on me that I had maxed out. I could not physically do anymore work in a week than I was doing at the time. I could not take on any more work because there was only one of me (and a helper) to do the work. Then, something occurred to me

I had also reached my limit, money wise. My earnings had plateaued. Since we could not physically produce more, we could not earn more. I was frustrated. I enjoyed owning my own business, but I also knew I could work less and earn more by working as a building superintendent in Houston. Imagine – free medical insurance, free dental insurance, a retirement plan, and more.

I had none of these benefits being self-employed. So I had to make a decision. Continue to work 70 hours a week at a fixed income with no benefits…or make a change. Well, I made a change!

I found a course offered by the Home Builders Association in San Antonio. This three-day seminar was full of fascinating information and interesting people. A fellow participant, Don Boozer, offered some great advice. He suggested I move into general contracting. Of course, I’d need to delegate, to share the responsibilities.

“But Don,” I asked, “if I don’t do the work, who will? I’ll just be phoning other people to do my work. Nobody’s going to pay me to make phone calls.”

Don’s reply was confident as he said, “Yes, they will pay you. They’ll pay you very well!” And you know what? They did!

The next year my income doubled (that superintendent job in Houston was no longer very attractive!) and the following year my income doubled again. After that, I never made less than six figures a year.

I’m not saying that to brag. Don’s advice helped me, and it can help you too.

Because, the only way to increase your income fast is to increase your business awareness fast. And the fastest way to do that is to start a web business or attend a conference that is specific to your industry. If you want to make money online, then go to a conference that is SPECIFIC to making money online and there you can map out a business plan for an online business!
